The Most Amazing Things (Some Terrible Lie) by copperbadge
Tony’s decision not to reveal his identity as Iron Man to the world was shrewd and calculated. Too bad it’s about to backfire on him like a Jericho missile.
Some good old Stony to keep the ball rolling. Imagine if Tony, instead of revealing his identity as Iron Man at the end of the first movie, decided to keep that secret. Iron Man is presented as Tony Stark’s personal bodyguard and the only ones that know different are Pepper and the top brass at S.H.I.E.L.D. Tony doesn’t even tell the Avengers who he is when they eventually form. He has his reasons, of course, mainly protecting the people he loves from repercussion, but this decision starts to backfire when he begins to fall for Steve. Steve, who’s falling for Iron Man, but not Tony Stark. Tony hangs out with the Avengers as Iron Man but not as Tony Stark, drawing that line in the sand that bites him in the butt in the end. I like that when the truth comes out, as it always does, the rest of the Avengers aren’t all “Oh, ok, Tony Stark is Iron Man, no biggie.” Actually, Steve, Clint, and Bruce are pissed and Tony has to make amends. This fic is equal parts funny and sad, but it’s mostly about Tony realizing that he has to accept all parts of himself, that he’s capable of being Iron Man and everything he represents even when he’s not suited up. Steve’s depiction is really great; he’s not fully adjusted to the new century but he’s playing catch-up as best as he can while falling in love with Tony, dragging him out of his shell (hah!) and teaching him what it means to live. Great fic by copperbadge, need to read more by them.
