The Most Amazing Things (Some Terrible Lie) by copperbadge

Tony’s decision not to reveal his identity as Iron Man to the world was shrewd and calculated. Too bad it’s about to backfire on him like a Jericho missile.

Some good old Stony to keep the ball rolling. Imagine if Tony, instead of revealing his identity as Iron Man at the end of the first movie, decided to keep that secret. Iron Man is presented as Tony Stark’s personal bodyguard and the only ones that know different are Pepper and the top brass at S.H.I.E.L.D. Tony doesn’t even tell the Avengers who he is when they eventually form. He has his reasons, of course, mainly protecting the people he loves from repercussion, but this decision starts to backfire when he begins to fall for Steve. Steve, who’s falling for Iron Man, but not Tony Stark. Tony hangs out with the Avengers as Iron Man but not as Tony Stark, drawing that line in the sand that bites him in the butt in the end. I like that when the truth comes out, as it always does, the rest of the Avengers aren’t all “Oh, ok, Tony Stark is Iron Man, no biggie.” Actually, Steve, Clint, and Bruce are pissed and Tony has to make amends. This fic is equal parts funny and sad, but it’s mostly about Tony realizing that he has to accept all parts of himself, that he’s capable of being Iron Man and everything he represents even when he’s not suited up. Steve’s depiction is really great; he’s not fully adjusted to the new century but he’s playing catch-up as best as he can while falling in love with Tony, dragging him out of his shell (hah!) and teaching him what it means to live. Great fic by copperbadge, need to read more by them.

Not In Love Song by waldorph

The five times Spock wasn’t in love, and the one time he couldn’t deny it anymore.

Seriously, I’m just scrolling through waldorph’s works now, picking ones to read and review. I’m not sorry. This one actually has a fairly accurate summary; five times Spock denies that he’s in love with Jim and the one time he realizes he’s been in love with Jim all along. It’s a standard 5+1 fic, but I think it’s really interesting how each one follows the progression of their relationship, building on each other. The first one deals with when they first meet, the last with the continuation of their relationship. It has life threatening moments, moments of self-discovery, tender moments, desperate moments - a hell of a lot of moment for something that isn’t even 3000 words long. That’s what I love about waldorph’s works; they manage to pack so much into a fic that isn’t even all that long. It leaves you simultaneously satisfied and wanting more, haha. Poor Spock, so in denial in this fic, with so many people recognizing what he refuses to acknowledge. In the end, though, it all comes back to James T. Kirk - and really, who can deny Jim Kirk?

A Long-Standing Union by what_alchemy

At 103, Jim knows he can’t go through another pon farr.

Ohhhh, I really, really, really shouldn’t have read this after watching Star Trek: Into Darkness so recently. I’ll warn you upfront that this story will make you sob like a little bitch, so if that’s what you’re in the mood for, tally ho. If not, I’d skip this one. It’s a good angst, though, packed full of good feels and sad feels. Unlike a lot of fics that focus on Kirk and Spock getting together for the first time, this Kirk and Spock have been together for years - decades, even. And Kirk can feel it in his bones every day - his age is rapidly catching up with him. He describes it as elderly to Spock’s middle-age, and it’s pretty accurate. Mostly, though, Kirk is worried about what will happen to Spock after Kirk dies; he doesn’t want Spock to wind up old and alone, pining for Kirk like Spock Prime did, until he dies of loneliness. So he tries to make contingency plans for Spock - specifically, find someone to take his place after death. I don’t know about you, but I really have to admire that in Kirk. I mean, when you die, you want to be selfish and think you’re the only person your partner will ever love, right? Kirk knows Spock will always love him, but he also wants Spock to continue to live, to be happy, even. This Kirk is probably one of my favorites I’ve read, ever. He’s still so Kirk, smart ass and cheerful and intelligent. And the ending… oh my god, tissues, ok? Have tissues. I didn’t. It was a bit of a mess. So, if you want to read the culmination of a beautiful relationship 77 years in the making, definitely read this one. Just read some ridiculous fluff piece after, to mend your heart.

Helloooo, Nurse! by lalazee

Jim Kirk is the only male nurse on the Enterprise. He’s also the only one with any experience with Vulcan biology. You can guess who he’s been assigned to.

Oh, poor Spock, you poor, confused thing. Jim Kirk is a nurse on the Enterprise, instead of the captain, and his specialty in Vulcan biology guarantees his assignment to one Mr. Spock. It’s an interesting twist to the Star Trek universe, one I’ve honestly never come across, and one I decidedly enjoyed. Jim has a believable back story, thankfully, so we’re not left floundering how he wound up a nurse instead of a captain. What I love most is that this fic is from Spock’s point of view, so we get to experience first hand how absolutely confused he is at the prospect of Nurse Kirk. Here’s a human who’s not only well-versed in Vulcan biology, but also their language and customs - and Spock is attracted like whoa. However, First Officers of starships really don’t have a reason to be hanging out the med bay everyday, which leads to a ridiculously pleased Spock whenever he sustains injury. Seriously, this fic is the only time you’ll find a happy Vulcan with a broken arm. I like that Jim still retains a lot of his personality quirks - bold, brash, flirty - but picks up a little sensitivity and common sense with his occupation. Overall, I enjoyed the flow and pace, but felt the ending might have been a tad rushed. Not enough to detract from the story line, but it does end a little abruptly, so be prepared for that. However, it’s very well done and in character and I enjoyed Spock’s depiction very much in this. Off to see what else lalazee has written!

my boy builds coffins by waldorph

Jim Kirk was a legend before he was even an hour old, and legends are never men. They are tragedies and heroes and cautionary tales and they never grow up or grow old, they simply are.

Jim Kirk is a pain in Spock’s ass.

Wasn’t kidding about the waldorph kick! Though this fic isn’t very long, it sure packs a kick. Spock observes Kirk in his role as starship captain of the Enterprise, with all the horrible decisions that come along with it. There is no easy way to be responsible for hundreds of lives on such a ship and when you lose even one life, it can be difficult. This Kirk is a responsible one, who takes his duties seriously, perhaps too much. Hand in hand with that responsibility of keeping his crew alive comes the necessary moments to give the order to end lives, particularly enemy ones. Spock notices that Kirk takes all of this into himself and doesn’t let anyone see what it does to him - until Spock says fuck that. This Spock is more willing to be ruthless when it comes to Kirk’s welfare and I gotta say, it’s kinda hot. The end of this piece, in particular, is pretty damn awesome. Kirk and Spock learn to rely on one another in their five years on space, and if that causes a few raised eyebrows, then I say screw Starfleet. Five years in space is a long ass time. When you build a meaningful relationship with someone like Spock, it’s going to damn well mean something. These two are destined for greatness and it’s interesting to see the shadowy side of that destiny. Onward to more waldorph fic!

Tiercel by waldorph

Arthur is constantly at war.

On a waldorph kick! No regrets, they’re a fabulous writer. Here is a fic that places a unique twist on Arthur’s destiny. He’s the Once and Future King and Merlin is always going to be the guiding magic at his side, but that doesn’t mean they’re always going to be together. Merlin realizes that he needs to learn more about what he is and his powers if he’s going to be any help at all for Arthur, so he makes the decision to start travelling. In the mean time, Arthur is wavering between being the son of Uther Pendragon and being the future king his people need. Throw in a love story between Arthur and Merlin and you have this fabulous tale. I really have to respect Merlin’s decision here. He knows that there are battles to be fought, wars to be won, and Arthur is going to have to be the one to fight them. His decision to come and go, but never stay, really puts a strain on his relationship with Arthur. Arthur is rapidly growing into his position as king and the people of his growing kingdom need him - need him to fight with them, rebuild with them, weep with them. You really have to respect how much these two grow in this fic; they’re no longer boys but not quite men, stuck in that phase between the two with all the responsibility of a king and a warlock. I love waldorph’s writing style, very smooth and realistic. Hope you enjoy this one as much as I did!

Love Story by waldorph

You were Romeo, you were throwing pebbles and my daddy said, “Stay away from Juliet” and I was crying on a staircase, begging you, “Please don’t go.”

Well, it’s been a while, guys. Sorry, school kicked my butt sideways and forward this semester. Saw Star Trek: Into Darkness last night and it was magical and inspiring; getting back on the fic rec train, so here we go. I was actually really hesitant to read this fic because I don’t think I can handle high school AU fic in the Star Trek universe; thank freaking GOD this is not that. It’s sooooo much better, holy crap. This is yet another fic that is loosely based on the Taylor Swift song, but no worries. I said loosely and I meant it. Kirk and Spock meet very young - Kirk’s still in high school, Spock hasn’t even joined Starfleet yet. Jim lives at home with his domineering stepfather Frank (seriously, fuck this dude) and his doormat of a mother (Winona Kirk, I am disappoint) and is itching to get the hell out of Kansas (well, Iowa). He and Spock just… click, really, right off the bat, and he encourages Jim to join Starfleet (conveniently, with Spock himself) to get away from the hell hole that is Jim’s life (Jim’s words, not Spock’s). A little of this happens, a little of that, Frank and Sarek find out about their relationship and shit hits the fan. Not to worry, there’s a happy ending for our (literal) star-crossed lovers. I enjoyed how this fic toyed with their timelines, yet still made it believable in the universe that is the reboot. It was a great story to get me going in this fandom again. I particularly enjoyed Jim’s presence in this fic; he’s a little shit and he knows how to work it, yet is still young and inexperienced. Spock is simultaneously young and old, but with a believable humaness to him without making him out of character. Love this fic!

The Company I Keep by slipintothewater (secondstar)

Stiles has a favorite table at the library. Then some asshole comes along and steals it from him.

University Human AU! And it’s freaking fabulous!! Stiles is an overworked undergrad who has a designated study table in the library - until this insanely hot asshole just takes it over. Cue Stiles simultaneously hating and pining over this random dude - until they decided to mutually share the table and Stiles realizes that Derek is actually a pretty chill dude. As someone who’s currently in college, I have to say that I love how accurate this fic is regarding college life. Oh my god, this fic nails it spot on. College life sucks, ok. It’s an endless repetition of classes and studying and cramming and trying to find time to eat and maybe wash a load of laundry. Stiles has it far worse, though; he’s taking 21 hours in one semester, the dumbass. That’s half his week in class, which leaves the other half a mad scramble of no sleep and all work. And let’s just throw this roller coaster of attraction to Derek Hale on top of all that craziness, shall we? I also love how real Derek and Stiles’ relationship is. College is all about whirlwind relationships, which they have without a doubt, but the potential to be so much more is given a solid groundwork, too. They work at their relationship in order to MAKE it work. Too many times people think being in love is enough to make a relationship last, and you see it fairly often in fics; actual relationships require compromise and arguments in equal amounts. Absolutely love the realistic tone this fic has and am going to check out what else the author has to offer!

Two Coffees One Black One with Sugar Please by Linpatootie

A somewhat pointless experiment on Sherlock’s behalf leads to John having to re-evaluate pretty much his entire life.

Somehow (read: nagging until John gives in) Sherlock convinces John to help in a sleep study (For Science, John!) that requires the two of them to share a bed for one month. This month passes swiftly with John realizing a few things: Sherlock talks in his sleep, John has less nightmares with Sherlock around, Sherlock has less nightmares with John around, and John is actually kind of gay for his flatmate. So when the end of the month rolls around and they go back to their separate beds, they’re so accustomed to sleeping with one another that they hardly can sleep at all. This is a series of four fics, (a complete one, though!) that walk us through John realizing he loves Sherlock, having a bit of a freak out, confessing to Sherlock - who already knows, the prat - and then getting on with having a relationship with each other. What’s so great about this series, these individual fics, is how they literally progress through the relationship. John doesn’t immediately realize he’s in love with Sherlock, nor does he casually accept it, either. He’s never had feelings for a man before, and of all the people he chose to fall for, Sherlock is not the easiest person to love. Once John decides to accept his feelings, though, and Sherlock assures him he reciprocates those exact feelings, they don’t just jump straight into bed, either. They do couple-y things first! Imagine, having a real relationship in a fic, haha. I love how natural and real this series is, how, when they do eventually progress to a sexual relationship, it’s just one more step to spending the rest of their lives with each other. It’s a beautiful series, this, and I would love to read more by this author. :)
